Introduction to KPIs
KPIs (key performance indicators) are the numbers a space tracks on a regular cadence. Each KPI has a name, a unit, a weekly or monthly cadence, and an optional champion. Over time you log updates so the chart and history show how the metric is moving.
Unlike goal targets, a KPI is not tied to a start value and a target value. It is a standing metric for the space: revenue, NPS, uptime, or whatever that team watches.
What you can do#
- See every KPI for a space in one list, with champion, sparkline history, and latest value
- Create a KPI and edit its settings on its own page
- Log updates, then correct or remove a value you already logged
- Annotate the chart with dated events and comment on an update
- Delete a KPI the space no longer tracks
How to get there#
- Open a space. On the space home, click the KPIs tool card.
- From the KPI list, click a row to open that KPI’s page. The breadcrumb KPIs takes you back to the list.
If you do not see KPIs on the space home, a space manager can turn the tool on under Configure tools. See Space tools.
The KPI list#
The list is titled KPIs. Columns are KPI, Champion, History, and Latest value.
- A KPI with no logged values shows No data.
- A champion who has not been set shows Unassigned.
- When the space has no KPIs yet, you see No KPIs yet and the line “Track key metrics for this space and record updates over time.” People who can edit the space also see Add the first KPI.
The space home KPIs card lists up to seven KPIs with their latest value and sparkline. With no KPIs yet, the card explains: “Track the numbers this space cares about and log updates on a weekly or monthly cadence.” People who can edit the space see Track a KPI.
The KPI page#
The KPI name leads the page. Below it you can add a Description. The chart shows history and the current reading (for example as of a date). Next to the chart, people who can edit the space see Add annotation and Log update. Below the chart, Recorded updates lists each value by Date, Recorded by, Value, and Comments.
The sidebar has Champion, Cadence, Unit, Notifications, and Actions (Copy URL and Delete).
Cadence and Review#
Each KPI uses Weekly or Monthly cadence. If a KPI has a champion, that person gets a Review item Log update for the KPI name when the current period does not have a value yet. Weekly periods run Monday through Sunday. Monthly periods follow the calendar month. See View your due actions.
